A man with a varied background, R. Linley Richter, Jr. has lived an interesting life on his way to becoming an attorney.  As a young man growing up in Nashville, Tennessee, he enjoyed sports, playing football, baseball, basketball, and running track.  During high school, sports gave way to music, where he won the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award for his work as the pianist of the school’s Jazz Band.  His musical talent led to a music scholarship to Belmont College where he majored in Commercial Music.  While at Belmont, he played piano for the school’s public relations group and arranged jazz charts for the Belmont Jazz Ensemble.

In 1980, he left Belmont College and began attending Middle Tennessee State University, where he became a licensed pilot—a hobby he still enjoys.  After earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Economics and a minor in Accounting and Computer Information Systems, he worked at several jobs in the retail and restaurant industries and even managed a men’s shoe store.  However, it soon became apparent that he was best suited for the law.  In 1988, he began law school at the University of Memphis, where he met his wife of 30 years.  While in law school, he excelled to a position on the Moot Court Board, and in 1990 he received the Best Brief Award for his work in the Mock Trial Competition.

He began the private practice of law in 1992, concentrating his practice in criminal, personal injury, workers' compensation, and domestic/family law.  In 2014, he formed Richter Family Law Group, P.C.  Mr. Richter currently concentrates his practice mainly in the area of family law which includes divorce, child custody, child support, alimony, adoption, and dependent and neglect.  He also handles a number of family law cases involving military service members and their spouses.  Mr. Richter is a Rule 31 Listed Family Law Mediator and is specially trained in domestic violence issues.

However, his most cherished role is that of husband and father.  Married since 1993, he and his wife Kathy adopted a little boy from Soc Trang, Vietnam in 1998, and named him Joshua.  While spending time with his family, he enjoys traveling, playing golf, working out, cooking, and playing music.

His varied background and experience, both in and out of the courtroom, give him a unique perspective from which to view and craft solutions to complex and difficult legal issues.  His experience in the various facets of law gives him the ability to understand and handle almost any legal problem brought to his attention.
